A laxative is a type of medication or substance used to relieve constipation by stimulating bowel movements or softening stool. Laxatives work in various ways: some increase the movement of the intestines (stimulant laxatives), some draw water into the bowel to make stools softer (osmotic laxatives), and others add bulk to the stool (bulk-forming laxatives). They’re often used for short-term relief of constipation, but long-term use should generally be avoided unless advised by a healthcare provider.
Englisch: laxative.
