Die Appendix vermiformis, auch Wurmfortsatz genannt, ist ein kleiner, fingerförmiger Fortsatz des Blinddarms. Sie befindet sich im rechten unteren Quadranten des Abdomens. Während die Funktion der Appendix lange Zeit als unbedeutend galt, gibt es Hinweise darauf, dass sie eine Rolle im Immunsystem spielen könnte, insbesondere bei der Unterstützung der Darmflora. Eine Entzündung der Appendix, die sogenannte Appendizitis, erfordert häufig eine chirurgische Entfernung.

Englisch: Vermiform appendix. The vermiform appendix, commonly referred to as the appendix, is a small, finger-like projection attached to the cecum of the large intestine. Located in the lower right quadrant of the abdomen, the appendix has been considered a vestigial organ, but recent studies suggest it may play a role in the immune system, particularly in maintaining gut flora. Appendicitis, an inflammation of the appendix, often requires surgical removal.
